El Paso Independent School District’s TV Production Studio Goes Digital

07/15/10

June 15, 2010 - Denver CO - The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is upgrading its District Professional Development Center’s TV production studio and control room as it transitions from analog to digital high definition.  The project, which was designed by Howard Steele of Technology Plus, began in early spring and will be completed prior to the start of the 2010/2011 school year.  Tom Norman is design engineer and Dave Stengel is project manager for Burst

The enhanced, multi-use production studio features a design unique for a school district production facility with a built-in classroom for recording lessons and best practices. It will be used primarily for instructional programming, teleconferencing with other schools in the district, and teacher training.  It will also feed programming to the local Time Warner cable system and will stream content to the Web.

The studio will be equipped with Sony PMWEX3 cameras:  two mounted on Telemetric pan/tilt heads.  A third “EX3” is for use in the field. The studio will also house three additional self-contained Sony EVIHD1 pan/tilt/zoom cameras and Lifesize video conferencing set up as a virtual classroom for distance learning.   The studio is designed to use Reflectmedia for chroma keys.

The control room features a TBC console with Broadcast Pix HD Switcher, 360 Systems Maxx2500HD server, and a TASCAM audio mixer.  The design incorporates two existing two Apple Final Cut Pro NLE workstations, as well as other legacy equipment.  Infrastructure includes a new Harris routing switcher, various signal processors and converters housed in new Middle Atlantic Racks.
